I’m Brennan. I follow scams and breaches every day, and I write Cyber for Normies: a free weekly email that explains scams, data breaches and simple fixes in plain English, for people who don’t work in tech.
Staying safe online shouldn’t require a computer science degree. Most of the people I know aren’t careless. They’re busy, and the advice out there wasn’t written for them.
A lot of security advice is written for experts, or written to scare you. I started Cyber for Normies to do the opposite: explain what matters, skip what doesn’t, and give you one small step at a time.
How I write these pages
- I write every issue myself.
- Every fact links to the government agency or official source it came from, like the FTC, FBI, FCC, or CFPB.
- If a term needs explaining, I explain it. Every fix comes with the steps.
- This is general education for everyday people, not personal security, legal or financial advice.
Start here
- How to freeze your creditFree by law, doesn't touch your score. Equifax, Experian, TransUnion, and the optional extras.
- Unpaid toll and E-ZPass textsIs that toll text a scam? Almost always. How to check, and what to do if you paid.
- USPS redelivery textsReal USPS texts don't have links. How to spot the fake redelivery text.
- Fake voter registration textsA text says you're not registered to vote? Check it yourself at vote.gov.
